Preparatory Course for Test of English as A Foreign Language (TOEFL)


The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand American English at university level. It measures English language proficiency in reading, listening, and writing. It is used by universities in the United States, Canada and a number of other countries. A number of government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate one's English proficiency.

The TOEFL Examination

The TOEFL iBT® test, administered via the Internet, measures a student's ability to use and understand English at the university level. It also evaluates how well one is able to combine listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.

Course Structure

  • Students will familiarize themselves with listening exercises using excerpts from academic lectures and real life conversations.
  • Skills include identifying the main ideas, recognizing a speaker's purpose, classifying items into categories and identifying a sequence of events.

  • Students will have reading exercises which require an understanding of academic passages written in English.
  • Key skills include scanning for information, making inferences and completing charts and tables.

  • Students will be given writing exercises which help them organize their ideas and express them in academic English.
  • Skills include taking notes, making outlines and correcting writing errors.

  • Students will be given speaking exercises to help them organize their thoughts and effectively present spoken responses.
  • Skills include taking notes, creating outlines and summarizing.

At the end of the module, students will be able to:
  • converse and argue in various contexts, on both personal and academic levels
  • understand interventions of a certain length in various fields when standard language is used
  • read texts of a certain length in an academic context
  • summarize information from different sources and media
  • write a structured formal or argumentative text of a certain length
  • develop independent learning strategies, especially those relevant to exams

Course Duration

3 months (Full-time) and 6 months (Part-time).

Classroom learning, lessons to be conducted at Edvantage Institute (Singapore).


All our teachers are registered with the Committee for Private Education (CPE).

Age Requirements

7 years old and above.


A student will only be admitted should he satisfy either of these pre-requisites:

English at the advanced level or through a placement test conducted by Edvantage Institute (Singapore).

Assessment and Examination

A test is conducted every 6 weeks, culminating in the final course examination. The teacher will write a detailed course report which includes the student's grades in listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as an evaluation of his progress in the course.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive an in-house certificate within 21 days from the last day of the course.


The performance grading will be as follows:

CREDIT 65 - 79
PASS 50 - 64
FAIL 0 - 49

Graduation Requirements

Obtain a Pass in all Assessment Components.

External Grading and Certificate

For the TOEFL iBT test, administered via the Internet, students will receive four scaled section scores and a total score:

  • Reading Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Listening Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Speaking Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Writing Section (Score of: 0-30)
  • Total Score (0-120)

In addition to students' scores, the test taker score report also includes performance feedback that is a reflection of the students' performance level and a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported score range can typically do.

There is no passing or failing TOEFL scores. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date and there is no limit to the number of times one can take the test, but it cannot be taken more than once in a 12-day period.
