Preparatory Course for Diploma In Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Introduction

Edvantage Institute (Singapore) offers the Preparatory Course for Diploma in TESOL. This course allows students to acquire the necessary English teaching skills, techniques, knowledge and training to be effective teachers in a modern classroom. With a TESOL certificate you will be able to put your English teaching skills to good use in many countries around the world.

Course Structure

Module 1:

Language Theory. The needs and motivation of learners, nature and varieties of language, acquiring language and the approaches, methods and principles of language teaching.

  • Nature of language and varieties – historical, geographical and social
  • Appropriateness of English language
  • Language acquisition in young learners
  • Methodologies and principles of ESOL language teaching
  • Teaching development, practicum preparation and trial presentations

Module 2:

Language Teaching Methodology. The application of approaches, methods, principles and techniques. Uses of a range of teaching materials and teaching aids are covered.

  • Applying methods for effective learning - teaching the four skills
  • Questioning in class
  • Teaching materials and aids - rhyme and song, pictures, flashcards and word cards, role play, drama, games and puzzles, effective use of the whiteboard and electronic teaching aids
  • Teaching development, practicum preparation and trial presentations

Module 3:

Classroom Planning and Organisation. Arriving at lesson delivery, starting with the syllabus and going on to aims for the lesson and creation of the lesson plan. We also cover effective classroom management.

Module 4:

Linguistics and Language. Teaching Phonetic, phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary English.

  • Phonetics – production of individual sounds
  • Phonology – phonological features in words and longer elements of speech
  • Morphology of words
  • Vocabulary and semantics
  • Grammar, structures and error
  • Teaching development, practicum development and trial presentations

Practicum:

During the course, students will build a lesson plan and teaching materials for the practicum with the help of the tutors. The practicum is carried out after all four modules have been completed. Students will be required to deliver a 45-minute practicum lesson to a class of foreign students. After the practicum lesson, the assessor will discuss his assessment of the practicum with the student.

Edvantage Institute (Singapore) provides 125 total classroom/assessment/practicum and supervised teaching development hours and participants are expect to clock a minimum of 55 hours of private study to bring the total course effort to 180 hours.

Delivery Mode

Lectures, tutorials, lesson observations & practicum will be conducted at Edvantage Institute (Singapore).

Teachers

All our teachers are registered with the Committee for Private Education (CPE).

Prerequisites

  • At least five passes in GCE 'O' Level to include a pass in English; or equivalent qualification in own country; or other qualifications in English, e.g. IELTS Band 5.5 / TOEFL 600.
  • Age - Young adults to retirees. Minimum 18 years of age.

Assessment and Examination

A test is conducted at the end of each module. Students are required to do a practicum upon completion of all 4 modules.

Upon completing all the modules, students will receive a letter of completion from Edvantage Institute (Singapore) within 21 days from the last day of the course.

Award

Upon completion of the course, students will receive the LTTC Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) - Dip TESOL issued by The London Teacher Training College. Click here for a sample of the TESOL Certificate.
